Chapter 5
âDo you think one of us should go to the hospital to check on Kendrick?â Felicia and Angie were sitting in the kitchen at the center. Breakfast had been cooked and eaten. Dishes were washed and put away. The rest of the crew was in the garden or had started painting the outside of the house.
Angie shook her head. âNo. It would look weird. Maybe we can take him flowers tomorrow. We have stuff to do here and only two more days to get it done.â
âI canât believe how fast he got sick. Nancy said he was talking about his family and all of a sudden, it was like heâd had a seizure. Iâm glad I wasnât in the room with him. I would have freaked out. Nancy was calm and collected. She stabilized Kendrick, called for Ian, and kept her cool during the whole thing.â Felicia leaned back in her chair. âOkay, Angie, whatâs going on? Youâre too quiet and not feeding into or feeling my whole conspiracy theory.â
âYou havenât laid out a theory yet.â Angie stood and got the pot to refill Feliciaâs coffee. âBut I have to admit, he seemed fine yesterday. Can I tell you something else weird?â
âOf course.â Felicia pulled in closer. âWhat do you know?â
âI donât know anything. I found Dom out in the hallway last night after everyone went to bed. Youâre going to think this is strange, but Dom appeared to be guarding Randyâs room. And this morning, Randyâs not sick like he says heâs been, but Kendrick is. What if someone was going to give something to Randy, but Dom wouldnât let them?â
âThatâs probably pushing the limit for believability.â Felicia looked around the kitchen. âHey, where is Dom? Did someone take him out?â
Angie stood and motioned Felicia to follow. When they reached Randyâs room, they saw Dom lying by the manâs chair. Randyâs hand was on Domâs fur and he seemed to be reading aloud to the dog.
Felicia started to say something, but Angie shook her head and pointed back to the kitchen. When they sat back down, she picked up her coffee cup. âThe only times Iâve seen Dom act like that is when Ianâs told him I was in danger and he had to watch out for me. I swear, Dom knows something bad has been happening to Randy and doesnât want it to happen again.â
Felicia shrugged. âYou could be right. Anyway, have you found Randyâs son yet?â
Angie shook her head. âWe have some calls out, but so far, nothing.â
âLet me do some checking. Iâll be right back with my laptop.â Felicia stood and started to walk out toward the hallway.
âBring my notebook too,â Angie called after her. She studied the meal plan for the day. She needed to get some work done on the pantry as well. She wanted everything here to be as safe as possible. Even though she still didnât think Carol was doing this on purpose, she didnât want to take any chances.
As if sheâd been pulled from Angieâs nightmare, Carol appeared in the doorway.
